Write down three amounts before reserving
A quoted groom, the payment required to reserve it, and the charge for cancelling it answer different questions. First ask for the service total or an explained range. Then ask how much is payable before the appointment and whether that payment reduces the final bill. Finally, ask what happens at specific cancellation times. A deposit is not automatically an additional service charge, and the word deposit alone does not establish refund terms.
Use the same dog, coat condition and service when comparing providers. Write down the requested finish, package inclusions, travel charges and pickup arrangements. The examples below explain the calculation; they do not rank the salons or replace a current booking agreement. Operator pages were retrieved on October 4, 2026. Their own policy effective dates and any older directory snapshots remain separate.
A deposit per pet can change the upfront amount
A Classy K9's contact page specifies a $50 deposit for each first-time pet and says it is refundable with 48 hours' notice. Two first-time pets therefore require $100 in deposits. That does not establish the price of either groom. Ask explicitly whether each deposit is credited, which appointment it covers, and what happens if only one pet's appointment is cancelled.
For an illustrative $120 agreed visit with a $50 deposit credited to that visit, the remaining balance is $70. The total is $120, rather than $170. If the operator describes a separate non-credited booking charge, record that charge in the service total instead. Do not assume that the illustrative $120 is A Classy K9's price; its cited page does not provide that quote.
Compare notice windows with the same cancellation time
Bath & Biscuit's service page posts a 48-hour notice requirement with a 50% charge for shorter notice and a 100% charge within 24 hours. Its policy also says a late arrival exceeding 15 minutes may be rescheduled under the within-24-hour rule. Sudsy Mutt's policy states a 50% charge for cancellation or rescheduling within its 24-hour window. These are different published rules, even when two quotes have the same base price.
Suppose each quoted service is $80. Cancelling 30 hours before the start falls inside Bath & Biscuit's 48-hour window, giving $40 at the stated 50% rate. It falls outside Sudsy Mutt's stated 24-hour late window; that particular late-cancellation clause does not establish a charge. At 12 hours, the published rates give $80 and $40 respectively. These are calculations using a hypothetical $80 quote, not the businesses' actual service prices or a ruling on a dispute. Confirm exact boundary times, deposits and any other agreed terms.

Keep a retained deposit separate from an extra cancellation charge
If a business keeps a $25 deposit and charges another $15 for the chosen cancellation scenario, the total loss is $40. If the business says its total cancellation charge is $40 including the deposit, record $25 retained and $15 extra. Adding the full $40 again would incorrectly produce $65.
Before paying, request the cancellation terms in a form you can revisit. Record the appointment date and local start time, the notice deadline, the contact method for cancelling, and whether notice needs acknowledgement. Ask separately about illness, incomplete vaccination records, an unsafe or unfinished groom, and salon-initiated changes; a generic no-show clause does not explain every case.
A pickup fee is different from planned daycare
Canine & Abel's menu lists playtime at $3 per hour and late pickup at $15 per 15 minutes. Two charged late-pickup periods therefore cost $30 under that rate, rather than $3. The menu does not establish when the late clock starts or how a partial period is rounded. Agree on the collection time and any permitted longer stay before the visit; inexpensive playtime does not grant permission for an unplanned delay.
Sudsy Mutt describes a travel allowance after its pickup call and says a daycare charge applies when collection is more than an hour after notification unless a later time was discussed beforehand. The cited page does not give the fee amount. This is a cost to ask about, not a zero to insert into a comparison. Arrange a backup collector if you cannot respond to the completion call.

Prepare a short booking record
A useful record fits on one page: the dog's name and requested service, the quoted range and possible changes, payments already made, the notice window, the pickup plan and the person to contact. It reduces the chance of comparing a starting price with an all-inclusive quote or overlooking a fee while arranging a busy day.
Use the quote comparison worksheet for arithmetic and the call-script builder for the conversation. Costs are one part of choosing a provider. A suitable handling approach, service scope and realistic collection plan can matter more than a small price difference. When a policy is unclear or conflicts with another page, resolve the specific point directly before reserving.
- What is included in the quote, and what could change after coat assessment?
- Does my deposit reduce the final total, and is it required per pet?
- What would I owe if I cancel 30 hours or 12 hours beforehand?
- Does that amount include any retained deposit?
- When does late pickup begin, what is each charged period, and is a longer stay allowed?
